Death and Transition Series at LICHEN CENTER presents a class on “What is green burial?” with Mary Lauren Fraser

What is green burial?

This question will be at the center of class with Mary Lauren Fraser on August 26th at LICHEN CENTER. Come learn about what green burial is, how to arrange a green burial, facts on home funerals, resources for DIY funerals, some history of the funeral industry, burial practices today, and the many options for burial. Mary weaves willow coffins for green burial and will be telling stories about her work and process in this craft.

Mary apprenticed under Karen Collins in Scotland and now offers handmade willow caskets to the local and greater New England community. Mary supports the growing movements of green burial and traditional home funerals in North America. Rather than shipping caskets far and wide, Mary hopes to inspire weavers from throughout North America to cultivate this traditional craft within their own local communities.

Mary lives and works in southern Vermont. Mary also plays fiddle and teaches and performs solo and in various collaborations.
